What is Project vNext?

My name is Derek Rushing, and I founded Project vNext after having worked in Software Development for over 15 years. I have spent most of that time handling infrastructure and data platform needs of multi billion dollar legal and financial tech companies. Before starting Project vNext I was the Senior Principal Engineer at DailyPay. When I arrived, it was a system that was making around $50M a year, but falling over every few weeks and unable to deploy more than a couple times a day. When I left it was a system making over $500M a year, that never falls over, deploys dozens of times a day (Domain Oriented Architecture), and costs less than it did when I got there.

Project vNext is meant to make my learnings (both from success and failure) more accessible to more companies. After working for 6 companies over 15 years I developed a focus on Architecture, BTD (Build, Test, and Deploy), and the Development Process. Everything else matters, but if you mess those up then you aren’t going to be able to continue to develop features at the pace you need to grow your business.

What does Project vNext do differently?

From a Development perspective, Project vNext practices Disaster Driven Development (DDD). Most people are familiar with TDD (Test Driven Development), but what Project vNext tries to focus on is your next disaster and how to mitigate it. That could be anything from

  • Your database is about to fall over

  • You don’t have enough features to make money

  • Your CI/CD takes too long and are losing the ability to make changes quickly

Project vNext is here to help you figure out your biggest pain point and help fix it. Could be 1000s of lines of code, or the right setting in a DB, either way the focus is on disasters as they almost always have the biggest returns on investment.

From a consultation perspective, the goal is to help you tackle 1 or more of your hardest problems and make near immediate improvements. Getting things perfect takes time, but getting things better is usually something that can happen quickly.
